Indigenous Peoples Are Fighting to Save the Earth for All of Us
by Pamela Leiva Jacquelín, Intercontinental Cry -
13 SEP 2017
Imagine that your survival depended on defending your right
to live where you are standing right now.
Any day, the government could decide to start extracting oil
or constructing a highway, exactly where your family goes to sleep
every night, without consulting you. Just picture the mine or
highway polluting the water you drink and poisoning the soil so
completely that crops can't even grow. On top of this, every day you
are pushed to speak a foreign language in a country that endangers
your culture and way of life.
This scenario is not fictitious. It is a reality for many of
the 370 million people worldwide who identify as Indigenous Peoples.
If there could be a simple way to define them, we can agree that
they are the living descendants of the pre-colonized inhabitants of
lands now dominated by others....

Change of Venue Granted for DAPL Protester Accused of Firing a Gun
by J.R. Havens, KFYR-TV - 13 SEP 2017
A woman who was charged in January with firing a gun during a
Dakota Access Pipeline protest in November, has been granted a
change of venue.
A court document filed today says the trial for Redfawn
Fallis will now be in Fargo in December.
The document says Fallis’ motion argues that a change of
venue is necessary to ensure she receives a fair and impartial trial
due to “widespread prejudicial publicity regarding the Dakota Access
Pipeline protests in general, and her arrest in particular.”
Wednesday's protests pulled a bevy of state police troopers off
other deployments, according to Capt. John Penniman. HEATHER

10 Arrested in Pipeline Protest at Tennessee Gas Co. Headquarters in
Sandisfield
by Heather Bellow, The Berkshire Eagle
SANDISFIELD [MA] — Another round of anti-pipeline protests
and arrests here Wednesday stalled pipeline workers and pulled more
than 20 Massachusetts State Police troopers into the area.
A total of 10 activists were arrested at or near the local
Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co. headquarters on South Beech Plain Road, a
dirt road that intersects a farm and the company's nearly completed
and existing natural gas pipelines.
Protesters from both Sugar Shack Alliance and a water
protector camp in Central Massachusetts began the blockade around 11
a.m. while another group that dubbed themselves the "pink police"
knocked on the door at company headquarters, and presented a mock
arrest warrant for Kinder Morgan Executive Chairman Richard Kinder
and former Vice Chairman William Morgan.

Enbridge Has Failed to Make Case for Line 3 Plan: Minnesota
Department of Commerce
by Steve Karnowski, The Associated Press; Global News, Canada
- 12 SEP 2017
Enbridge Energy has failed to establish the need for its
proposal to replace its aging Line 3 crude oil pipeline across
northern Minnesota and it might be better to just shut down the
existing line, the Minnesota Department of Commerce said Monday.
In filings with the state Public Utilities Commission on
Monday, the agency said refineries in Minnesota and the upper
Midwest already have sufficient supplies of crude oil and little
capacity for processing more of it. It said Minnesota’s demand for
gasoline and other refined petroleum products appears unlikely to
increase over the long term. And it said the proposal carries
serious environmental and socio-economic risks that outweigh the
benefits to Minnesota....

Liberation As Santa Fe Celebrates Conquest and Genocide
"I pray that liberation becomes something possible in
the minds of all Native people"
by Jennifer Marley, San Ildefonso Pueblo; Censored
News - 12 SEP 2017
On Friday, my predictions of increased violence from police
and Entrada attendees came true. Everything we have been trying to
bring to light was shown loud and clear; the logic of conquest is
alive and well here in New Mexico. For those of you who have not
read any of the recent articles pertaining to the situation, I will
give a brief recap.
Santa Fe police created illegal boundaries made to corral
peaceful protesters on public property. Anyone with basic knowledge
of criminal trespass law knows that no one can "trespass" on public
property. This alone has caught the attention of national legal
organizations. The barricade that police set up was deemed a "free
speech zone," but it was more akin to a reservation. The Santa Fe
Police Department's (SFPD) upfront lack of regard for the basic
civil rights of protesters is something that exemplifies what I mean
when I say "it's only free speech if it's racist." At one point a
Native man was arrested for criminal trespassing because he was
wearing a bandana on his head in the plaza; because he was simply
existing in that space....
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —
A U.S. district judge cited tribal sovereignty in dismissing a
lawsuit aimed at shutting down a coal-fired power plant and adjacent
mine near the Arizona-New Mexico border.
The lawsuit by environmental groups was targeting the 2015 approval
by the U.S. government of a lease extension for the Navajo Mine and
the Four Corners Power Plant, which has for decades provided
electricity to customers throughout the Southwest.
The groups argued that the Interior Department and other agencies
did not consider clean-energy alternatives or possible effects on
endangered species in the region when they approved the 25-year
extension.
In the order issued Monday, Judge Steven Logan of Phoenix tossed the
case since the mine is owned by a corporation created by the Navajo
Nation, which makes it immune from such legal challenges. The judge
said the case could not move forward without the mine as a
defendant....
China to Phase Out Internal Combustion Engine Cars
China will set a deadline for automakers to end sales of
fossil-fuel-powered vehicles, becoming the biggest market to do so
in a move that will accelerate the push into the electric car market
led by companies including BYD Co. and BAIC Motor Corp.
Xin Guobin, the vice minister of industry and information
technology, said the government is working with other regulators on
a timetable to end production and sales. The move will have a
profound impact on the environment and growth of China’s auto
industry, Xin said at an auto forum in Tianjin on Saturday.
The world’s second-biggest economy, which has vowed to cap its
carbon emissions by 2030 and curb worsening air pollution, is the
latest to join countries such as the U.K. and France seeking to
phase out vehicles using gasoline and diesel. The looming ban on
combustion-engine automobiles will goad both local and global
automakers to focus on introducing more zero-emission electric cars
to help clean up smog-choked major cities.
“The implementation of the ban for such a big market like China can
be later than 2040,” said Liu Zhijia, an assistant general manager
at Chery Automobile Co., the country’s biggest passenger car
exporter that unveiled a new line for upscale battery-powered and
plug-in hybrid models at the Frankfurt motor show last week. “That
will leave plenty of time for everyone to prepare.”...

Fish Guts, Heritage Tomatoes: Red Lake Works to Feed Its Own by John Enger, MPR News - 12
SEP 2017
Red Lake Indian Reservation leaders hope within a few years
to feed the roughly 5,000 tribal members who live there with fresh,
organic produce grown on the reservation. It's an enormous task that
sounds more biblical than doable.
Tribal leaders, though, have a plan. It began in a garden and
a lot of it has to do with fish guts.
The tribe's first step toward what leaders call food
sovereignty was a small test plot planted last year — about an acre
of peppers, kale, and pretty much any other vegetable you can grow
in northern Minnesota. It wasn't terribly successful at first.
Last fall, tribal economic development director Sam Strong
had a few thousand pounds of fish guts hauled in from the tribe's
walleye processing facility, and tilled into the ground. Now the
tomato plants are 8 feet tall....

President Begaye Signs Executive Order Implementing Clean Energy
Economy for the Navajo Nation
Mihio Manus, Communications Director, Navajo Nation; Press
Release, - 12 SEP 2017
WINDOW ROCK - President Russell Begaye and Vice President
Jonathan Nez signed an Executive Order to build a clean energy
economy for the health and sustenance of the Navajo Nation on
Friday, Sept.8, during the Miss Navajo Pageant at the Navajo Nation
Fair.
The Executive Order aims to promote energy security while
safeguarding the health of the Navajo people and increasing the
Nation’s prosperity.
“Many of our people are concerned with the environmental
impacts resulting from the Nation’s dependence on fossil fuel
markets,” President Begaye said. “With this Executive Order, we plan
to further our utilization of renewable energy sources like solar,
where we can start to transition our buildings and street lights to
operate on solar energy.”
The Executive Order mandates that within 120 days the head of
each agency will submit a report detailing ways in which their
department can improve on its environmental performance. Within 180
days of the Order’s date, the Navajo Nation will establish an
integrated strategy towards environmental sustainability....

Corporations Have Legal Personhood, but Rivers Don’t? That Could
Change
Indian Country could finally see an end to
nonconsented infrastructure projects if they follow New Zealand’s
Maori in achieving legal protection for natural entities. by Kayla DeVault, Yes! Magazine -
12 SEP 2017
In mid-March of this year, New Zealand officially recognized
the Whanganui River as a living entity with rights. The river, which
the Maori consider their ancestor, is now offered protection through
the New Zealand legal system against any human or human-led project
that threatens its well-being. It is a critical precedent for
acknowledging the Rights of Nature in legal systems around the
world.
The communities seeking protection for their natural entities
through this approach are operating from a non-Western, often
indigenous paradigm that holds a spiritual reverence to homelands
and natural systems and an urgency to protect their natural
resources. These values are not held in the laws of colonial
governments like New Zealand, Australia, Canada, or the United
States. But that does not mean they cease to exist, and, in fact, we
are seeing a revival.
In response to the Standing Rock Sioux battle against the
Dakota Access pipeline, the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin amended its
constitution to include the Rights of Nature. This is the first time
a North American tribe has used a Western legal framework to adopt
such laws. Some American municipalities have protected their
watersheds against fracking by invoking Rights of Nature....

Trump Administration Erodes Environmental Protections
The courts have slowed some rollbacks but many have
moved ahead. by Elizabeth Shogren, DC Dispatch, High
Country News - 11 SEP 2017
The Trump administration has been steadily undoing
environmental protections established by the Obama administration.
Rules designed to fight climate change have been especially
targeted. Many such efforts are still underway because the
Administrative Procedure Act and other laws require agencies to go
through a lengthy process to rescind or rewrite a rule. That
includes drafting a proposal, weighing costs and benefits, seeking
public comment and submitting major rules to the White House Office
of Management and Budget for review. Executive orders and other
policies are easier to rescind. Here are some of the rollbacks that
have important implications for the West and public lands:...

Santa Fe, the Great Exploiter, Responds to Conquistador Protest with
Nazi-Style Oppression
by The Red Nation, Censored News -
11 SEP 2017
On Friday, September 8, approximately two hundred people
rallied in downtown Santa Fe, New Mexico to demand that the City of
Santa Fe abolish the racist reenactment of reconquest known as the
Entrada (“the entry”) and to bring attention to illegal fracking in
Chaco Canyon, a site that is sacred to Diné and Pueblo people. The
rally was led by The Red Nation (TRN), UNM KIVA Club, In the Spirit
of Po’Pay, and New Mexico Showing Up for Racial Justice (NM-SURJ),
as well as various other Native and non-Native groups.
The City ignored a statement issued by the #AbolishTheEntrada
coalition prior to the protest encouraging officials to stand with
us in denouncing racism and the celebration of genocide and
conquest. They instead chose to double down on their defense of
racism and violent colonial revisionist history by brutalizing
Indigenous people and violating their First Amendment rights. On
Friday, in Santa Fe, history didn’t repeat itself — it stayed the
same.
Indigenous people undergo ongoing brutalization by armed men
of the state who uphold white supremacy and settler colonialism on
stolen Pueblo land. Today, conquistadors and cavalrymen simply wear
different uniforms. But the tactics remain the same....

A Word About Brenda
Norrell and Censored News Al Swilling, SENAA International - 14 FEB 2015 For those wondering why the vast majority of shared
posts on SENAA International's Web site and Facebook page are from
Brenda Norrell's Censored News, it's very simple—and very complex. For
many years, Brenda Norrell was a major journalist for (forgive me,
Brenda) Indian Country Today (ICT) until they censored Brenda's articles
and terminated her without cause. After leaving Indian Country Today,
Brenda created the appropriately
named Censored News.
While at
ICT, Brenda was a voice for the Dineh (Navajo) people at
Black Mesa, Arizona, where bed partners Peabody Coal and the BIA were trying to
forcibly remove Dineh residents from their ancestral homes in order to
strip mine the land of its coal. That greed took the form of a
contrived, fictional "land dispute" between Dineh' and Hopi....

Censored News was created in 2006 after staff reporter Brenda
Norrell was censored repeatedly, then terminated by Indian Country
Today. Now in its 9th year, with 3.7 million page views around the
world, Censored News is published with no advertising, grants or

Today, Censored News maintains a boycott of Indian Country Today,
whose reporters have relied on plagiarism of others' hard work for
years, instead of being present to cover news stories. Now, with a
collective of writers, Censored News focuses on Indigenous Peoples and
human rights.

LSO MANAGEMENT: What They Are
and What to Do About Them SENAA International - 16 FEB 2010
Introduction
The computing public is becoming increasingly aware
of the existence of Local Shared Objects (LSOs),
also called "Flash cookies" or "Persistent
Identification Elements" (PIEs), the dangers they
pose, and the unethical ways that they are placed on
our machines. LSOs are the busybodies of the
Internet, sticking their
noses in your personal
business at every opportunity without
your knowledge or consent; and like most
busybodies, they're being found out.
With growing public awareness of LSOs comes a growing
demand for effective, real time control of them. Most
LSO management solutions offer management or deletion of
LSOs after potentially malicious ones have had time to
do their damage. Stand-alone LSO management utilities do
not offer real time protection, either. This tutorial
provides real-time management of LSOs....
